The Crown of Tatras

"Korona Tatr - Studium nad wybitnością szczytów tatrzańskich" - "The crown of Tatras - the study on topographic prominence of Tatra mountain peaks" is the article of Piotr Mielus that was published in "Magazyn Górski" Polish mountain magazine in October 2005. The author, well known Tatra lover and passionate explorer tries to put in order all controversial issues of topographic prominence of local mountain objects using clearly defined criteria. The project allowed Mielus to create and propose the brand new idea of "The crown of Tatras", cliassification of the most prominent peaks,
a great gift for all those climbers and hikers enjoying "collecting" mountain trophies patterining on popular alpine ideas or probably the most classic British "peakbagging" of Munros, Corbetts, Grahams, Donalds, Marilyns and God only knows what more!
The measure of prominence is the coefficient of so called "minimal, relative height difference" which shows how high is the given mountain rising above the pass that separates it from next, closest higher elevated mountain culmination. In the ridges which connect the given peak with other higher elevated ones we need to find the lowest elevated passes and to choose the lowest one of them so that to obtain so-called "border pass" which determines the prominence level of the given mountain peak.
The final value of the prominence coefficient equates in the difference of the analyzed mountain's elevation and the elevation of border pass showing in other words "the minimal altitude difference that must be attained by hiker/climber heading towards the peak from any higher elevated point" as the originator of "the crown of Tatras" explains the problem. The border value of the topographic prominence coefficient for Tatras has been contractually set at 100 metres what resulted in the list of 76 prominent mountain peaks according to those rules.
The first person who climbed all 76 summits of "the crown" is Władysław Cywiński, well known Tatra guide, mountain rescue team member and guidebooks' writer. What's worth mentioning Cywiński became the first climber ever who reached all named Tatra summit culimnations around 1990. The author of "the crown" accomplished his climbing mission with the list in September 2002 while summitting Ganek peak. Congrats!
